The suspension system is one of the important components in a car, which connects the body and wheels elastically. The main function of the overslung suspension is transferring all forces and torques between the wheels and the body, such as support force, braking force, and driving force, etc. It also reduces the impact loads transmitted from uneven road surfaces to the body, attenuates the resulting vibrations, ensures passenger comfort, and reduces the dynamic loads of goods and vehicles.

Traditional Suspension

The traditional suspension consists of a system of springs, shock absorbers, and connecting rods, which work together to keep the vehicle in contact with the road surface and maintain traction. Suspension can also protect the vehicle itself, passengers, and any cargo or luggage from damage and wear.

Electric Controlled Air Suspension

The electric controlled air suspension system changes the length of the spring by changing the volume of the air chamber in the suspension structure, which can adjust the ground clearance and the stiffness and damping characteristics.

From the structural diagram, there is not much difference from the traditional suspension structure, except that an air chamber is added above the spring. By changing the volume of the air chamber (in the vertical direction), the length of the spring can be changed to adjust the vehicle height, speed, turning angle, and rate. In addition, the shock absorber part is changed by the motor to adjust the damping force of the shock absorber according to the size of the air vent. The electric controlled air suspension system consists of a controller and control software, front and rear air springs (some designs are connected in series with shock absorbers, and some designs are separated from shock absorbers), height sensors, distribution valves, air pumps, air tanks, and related brackets, pipes, and wiring.

With the development of ECAS technology, the function, technical indicators, and reliability of electric controlled air suspension are becoming increasingly perfect, which improves the comprehensive dynamic performance and usability of the vehicle, such as horizontal control, stiffness and damping real-time adjustment, chassis lifting and lowering control and other performances.

For passenger cars, the electric controlled air suspension system can greatly improve the comfort of riding. New energy passenger cars urgently need to maintain ground clearance, eliminate vibration and protect the battery. For commercial vehicles, electric-controlled air suspension can assist in overload and oversize management, and extend the life of highways.

Air Suspension is Sensitive to Load Weight

The composition of the structure determines that it cannot work continuously under overload and oversize conditions with high risk of damage. The installation of trail air suspension on heavy-duty trucks is consistent with the national regulation of controlling overloading and oversize. At the same time, the advantages of isolation and adjustability are beneficial to reduce the impact force on the road surface during heavy-duty truck travel and extend the life of the road surface.
